Man's Mind

11" x 14"
Ink on Paper
2022

"I have a man's mind..." is the first part of a quote from Shakespear's Julius Caesar (act 2, scene 4). The quote is followed by "...but a woman's might," which my 2021 ink painting is named after. This is a scene in which the character Portia struggles with her inability to physically act on her situation despite being incredibly intelligent.

While this quote suggests ill things about the mind of men and might of women, it made me think about how each are still treated today. It was my hope to recontextualize these ideas of gendered strengths and weaknesses with these pieces. I find the men in my life struggle to have their mental health cared for, and are taught to turn away from view. This has catastrophic consequences on the way they are treated and the way they treat others. I truly believe man's mind is something worth healing, worth tending to.
